Inverter vs Fixed-Speed Compressors Explained

Almost every split system and ducted air conditioner sold in Australia is described somewhere in its marketing as "inverter," and for good reason: it is the single biggest efficiency development in residential air conditioning of the last two decades. Understanding what the word actually means, rather than treating it as a marketing sticker, helps both when buying new and when weighing up a used unit that may or may not have the feature.

What fixed-speed actually does

A fixed-speed, sometimes called non-inverter or single-speed, compressor has essentially two states: fully on or fully off. When the room is above the thermostat's setpoint, the compressor runs at full capacity until the temperature drops enough to satisfy it, then switches off completely. When the room drifts back up, it switches fully on again. This on-off cycling is simple, cheap to manufacture and was the standard for decades, but it has real costs: full-speed starts draw a large inrush current, temperature in the room swings between too warm and slightly overcooled rather than holding steady, and the repeated full stop-start cycling is the harder duty cycle for mechanical wear over the compressor's life.

What an inverter compressor does differently

An inverter system uses a variable-frequency drive to control the compressor motor's speed continuously, ramping up hard when the room is a long way from setpoint and then throttling back to a low, steady output once it is close, rather than switching off. This means the compressor rarely fully stops during normal operation; it just runs slower. The practical results are a room that holds a steady temperature rather than swinging a couple of degrees either side of setpoint, a much lower average power draw once the room reaches target, and far fewer full-load start cycles over the unit's lifetime, which is kinder to the compressor and the electronics driving it.

The running cost difference is real and it is large

For a room that is occupied for extended periods, such as a living area or a bedroom overnight, an inverter unit commonly uses somewhere between 30 and 50 percent less electricity than an equivalent fixed-speed unit doing the same job, because most of that time is spent at low, efficient output rather than repeatedly cycling at full draw. This is reflected directly in the energy star rating a unit carries: virtually every high-star-rated split system on the market today is an inverter model, and it is genuinely difficult to find a fixed-speed unit with a competitive star rating anymore because the technology simply cannot match inverter efficiency at typical Australian running patterns.

Where fixed-speed still shows up

Fixed-speed compressors have not disappeared entirely. They remain more common in some portable units, some older window-wall units, and occasionally in very low-cost imported split systems, plus of course in the large installed base of older systems still running in Australian homes. If you are looking at a used split system on the marketplace and the listing does not mention inverter technology, it is worth checking the model number against the manufacturer's specifications directly, because sellers do not always know the distinction themselves and "it cools the room fine" is true of both types.

Inverter technology forgives sizing mistakes better

One underrated advantage of an inverter compressor is how it interacts with capacity sizing. A fixed-speed unit that is slightly oversized for a room will short-cycle noticeably, switching on and off in quick bursts that wear the compressor and leave the room feeling clammy because humidity is never properly removed. An inverter unit sized slightly generously simply throttles down further and runs longer at low output, which is far gentler on the equipment and still manages humidity properly because the compressor stays running rather than stopping. This does not mean sizing does not matter for inverter units, but it does mean the margin for error is wider.

What it means for compressor longevity when buying used

A well-maintained inverter compressor generally has a comparable or longer service life than an equivalent fixed-speed unit, because it spends less time under the high mechanical and electrical stress of a full-load cold start. That said, the inverter's variable-frequency drive electronics add a component that fixed-speed systems do not have, and PCB or control board faults are somewhat more relevant to inverter systems as a result, particularly after a lightning strike or a period of unstable mains power. When buying a used inverter unit, ask specifically whether the outdoor unit's control board has ever been replaced or repaired, in addition to the usual compressor and coil checks.

Inverter technology in multi-head systems

Almost every multi-head system sold today relies on inverter technology in the outdoor unit, and it is the reason those systems work at all: a single outdoor compressor has to serve several indoor heads simultaneously, each potentially calling for a different amount of cooling or heating at any given moment, and only a variable-frequency inverter compressor can modulate its output smoothly enough to answer several independent demands from one shared unit. A fixed-speed compressor, with its simple on-off logic, cannot do this job, which is part of why fixed-speed multi-head systems essentially do not exist in the current market. If you are comparing a multi-head system against several standalone splits, know that the inverter question is effectively already answered on the multi-head side.

Making the call on a used unit

If you are comparing two similarly priced used units, one inverter and one fixed-speed, the inverter unit is almost always the better long-term buy purely on running cost, and the difference compounds over years of Australian summers. The exception is a genuinely low-use application, such as a rarely occupied spare room or a shed, where the smaller upfront cost of a fixed-speed unit and its lower running hours may make the efficiency gap less financially significant. For anything used regularly, treat inverter technology as close to a non-negotiable when shopping used listings, and confirm it directly against the model specification rather than taking a seller's word alone.
